Simi Hollow Body Guitar
How to make a simi hollow body guitar with a few simple tools

First you will need to draw out some templates to help you go by. It's easier to do this on an inexpensive piece of poster board instead of an expensive piece of wood.

Decide what type of wood you want to use for the build. I chose Mahogony since its known for its deep, warm tone and it is also very durable. I cut out the two sides and the neck from the 1" thick board. In the picture below you can see the three pieces together after being cut to give you an idea of how it will all fit together.

This is a simple way of making a hollow body. It's not a true hollow body but if you just want to remove some weight and give the guitar a different tone, this is an easy way to do it. Lay the two pieces of the body out (face down) and with a router, hollow out the cavities. Be carefull not to get too close to the sides and do not go any deeper than 1/4" on each pass. You will need to make several passes until you get the cavities as deep as you want them.

I decided to make a "through body" guitar instead of tackling a bolt on neck. In order to do this you will need to router out a channel on both sides of the body for the neck to fit into. Be careful when doing this because the cuts will need to be precise on both the neck and the body to ensure a tight fit. Take your time and measure twice!!!

Here is a picture of the three pieces together before any sanding to the outside of the body has been done.

You can use wooden dowels to hold the body together while you sand the outer design. By doing this you can work on the body without glueing it all together.

I also decided to add "F" holes to my guitar. Draw the design on the front of the guitar and carefully cut the design out. I used a Dremel tool with a wood cutting bit.
